My Favorite Things: 2009
As 2010 approaches, I thought I’d share some of my favorite discoveries of 2009. Some are directly related to gastroparesis, some are not. But all were informative, comforting or inspiring to me in one way or another. Enjoy!
Books
- Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec & Other Acid Blockers by Martie Whittekin: A must-read for anyone with digestive issues, even if you don’t have “heartburn” in particular.
- Get Off Your ‘But’ by Sean Stephenson: Very inspirational, especially for those who feel “stuck” because of illness.
- In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan: Anyone who eats, even those of us who eat very little, should read this book. It’s an eye-opening look at our food system and how what we eat affects our health, society, and planet.
- Health at Every Size by Linda Bacon: I’m in the middle of this one and it’s truly fascinating.
Articles/Blog Posts/Websites
- Gastroparesis from Shoot Me Now! blog: A very honest, to-the-point look at gastroparesis. My favorite part: “Despite my gastroparesis, the glass is always half full in my world, especially when I’m in the sunshine with my children.”
- A Look Back from The Road I’m On blog – I love the silver-lining message of this post about living with GP.
- 54 Ways to Respond to “You Look So Good!”: I have a feeling all GPers can relate to this.
- Rebound Acid Reflux with PPIs May Induce Dependence: If you’re currently taking medication for GERD or acid reflux, this is a must read.
- Advocacy for Patients: Free information, advice and advocacy services to patients with chronic illnesses in areas including health and disability insurance, Social Security disability, employment and school-based discrimination, resource location, and more. The lawyer who runs this site has a thorough understanding of gastroparesis and gastric electrical stimulation.
Videos
- Gastroparesis: From Emesis Basin to Enterra Therapy: Informative video lecture about all aspects of gastroparesis, including the gastric neurostimulator. (It’s 45 minutes long, so I posted a recap for those who don’t want to the whole thing.)
- Mind-Body Medicine: Fascinating lecture by Dr. Kevin Barrows. It’s long but very informative and particularly relevant since the stomach is often called the second brain.
Products
- Enterra Therapy: Ok, I’m not sure it’s really a “product,” but my favorite thing of 2009 is the gastric neurostimulator. It’s not a cure, but it is the best treatment option that exists for those of us with severe, drug-refractory gastroparesis.
- Iberogast: I’ve been using this product for a year now and it’s made a significant difference in terms of bloating. No more maternity jeans!
- Gourmet Caramels from Bequet Confections: In moderation (i.e. one per day), caramels are a reliably safe indulgence for me. These particular caramels, hand crafted in Montana are some of the best I’ve ever tasted. An 8 oz. bag lasts me a month, making the $15 price tag (including shipping) seem reasonable.
- Gins Gins Candy from Ginger People: I always have these on hand for bad days or sudden bouts of nausea while I’m out and about. This “ultra strength” version is 30% fresh ginger, a natural anti-nausea therapy.
- Justin’s Nut Butter Packs – Since my surgery, I’ve been able to eat peanut butter or almond daily…as long as I watch my portion size. These little packets have made that much easier. I just use 1/2 of the 2 tbsp packet at a time. No measuring or over-scooping from the jar. My fave varieties are Honey Peanut and Maple Almond. Bonus: they’re organic.
Quotes
- “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” ~ Philo of Alexandria
- “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.” ~ Corrie Ten Boom
- “Be gentle first with yourself if you wish to be gentle with others.” ~ Lama Yeshe

Thanks for linking to my post. I try to keep a positive attitude and find the good in everything.
My local Trader Joe’s has the Ginger Chew candies from The Ginger People. They can be quite addictive. Plus who could resist that adorable ginger fellow on the front of the package.
Gabriel, yes, the ginger chews are definitely addictive! I started with those before I found the hard candies.
Brittney, thanks for sharing your positivity. I really enjoy reading your blog and I wish you a fantastic 2010!
