Nutritious, GP-Friendly Banana “Ice Cream”
Look at any gastroparesis diet plan and you’re likely to see ice cream and frozen yogurt listed as “recommended.” Yes, they’re semi-liquid and therefore digest quickly, but let’s be honest. They’re also full of sugar, made from ingredients we can’t pronounce, and provide little (if any) nutrition.
Your body cannot function properly without proper nourishment, so GPers in particular really need to focus on maximizing the nutrition in every meal and snack. That means having ice cream and frozen yogurt as occasional treats — not everyday meals or snacks.
Thankfully, there’s an alternative that’s 100% natural, GP-friendly, and packed with nutrition. What’s more, there’s only one ingredient: a banana. Skeptical? I was, too. But I’m telling you, this stuff is good. It has the consistency of real soft serve ice cream and a pleasant, not overwhelming, banana flavor.
Bonus: bananas are low in fat and high in potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Ice cream…is not.

One ingredient. Two steps.
Ingredients
- One banana — peeled, sliced and frozen
Directions
- Place frozen banana slices into a food processor or Vitamix.
- Process for several minutes*, until the banana looks like soft serve ice cream.
*Initially, your bananas will look more like Dippin’ Dots than soft serve. Just keep going.
Peanut Butter “Ice Cream” Variation: add 1/2 tablespoon of organic creamy peanut butter during processing (adds 4 grams of healthy fat and less than 1 gram of fiber).

wow I am really going to try this because I can eat bananas
and peanut butter. In fact I eat them everyday for breakfast
and snacks. Thanks for this idea. I have found that Mcdonalds
caramel frappes are good and I do well with them. This sounds
more nurtritious.
I didn’t believe that this would work without any added liquid, and was entirely prepared (when I tried it out this morning) that I would need to add liquid and/or flavourings. I even had honey and vanilla paste on hand, just in case.
But it was just as you said – the ‘ice cream’ has just the right creamy and slightly caramel-y texture, and has enough flavour, but isn’t overwhelmingly banana-flavoured. It’s a hot day today, and this is just what I needed, and nutritious to boot!
Thanks!
just sliced and put my nanner in the freezer…looking forward to tryin it tonight.ty for sharing
Let us know what you think, Heather!
I saw this recipe on one of the websites I frequent and thought.. “huh?” I really need to try this too as I have had hankerings for ice cream and want to keep with the “more nutritious” aspects of treats..sort of

could I do this with a blender?
Hi, Stephanie. I’ve tried it in the dry container of a Vitamix and it worked really well. I’m not sure about a regular blender, but it’s certainly worth a shot. Please let us know how it works for you.

My twin sister (non-gper) and I tried this recipe today using a blender and some peanut butter. It was delicious! We both loved it. Has anybody tried it with nutella?
