What Is Iberogast?

Iberogast is a liquid herbal supplement that is used primarily for bloating and dyspepsia, but also has indications for heartburn, nausea and IBS symptoms.  While most Americans have never heard of Iberogast, it’s been used in Europe for 4 decades.  It has an impeccable safety record, with no reported side effects or drug interactions.

It’s made up of 9 herbal extracts, including Iberis amara, for which it is named, as well as Angelica, Chamomile, Caraway fruit, St. Mary’s Thistle, Balm leaves, Peppermint leaves, Celandine, and Licorice root.   It is both gluten and lactose free.  The taste is tolerable when mixed with a small amount of water.  The directions say to take 20 drops, three times per day with meals.

According to the manufacturer, Iberogast generally improves symptoms by improving motility with increased fundic accommodation and increased tonicity.  There have been a number of studies that have shown that it actually does have an effect on motility.

According to a 2007 Australian study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology:

Iberogast has an effect on gastric motility (movement/function) in specific areas of the gastrointestinal tract. It also helps to stimulate gastric relaxation and specific movements which may contribute to the way in which Iberogast provides relief to patients with functional dyspepsia (heartburn, bloating, cramping, nausea and general stomach pain).

Iberogast is available from multiple sources on the Internet for around $30 per bottle.  I always order mine from Amazon and have never had an issue.  I’ve been taking it for nearly a year and do notice a difference in my symptoms, especially bloating and heartburn, when I use it regularly.

Have you tried it?   What were your results?

I have found Iberogast to be very helpful with my IBS and my doctors are reassured that there is a consistent list of ingredients and quality control. It is available in Australia through naturopaths.
