A GP-Friendly Labor Day Weekend

It’s Labor Day weekend. You know what that means:  picnics and barbecues.  While social events that revolve around food are often uncomfortable, even awkward, for those of us with gastroparesis, the right mindset and a little preparation can go a long way. Here are some suggestions if you’re heading out to a holiday gathering this weekend.

My number one tip is to bring your own GP-friendly foods and beverages.  This eliminates the stress that comes from trying to figure out which of the offerings are safe and potentially suffering the consequences of a poor choice. Make sure to treat yourself to your favorite staples – things that you’ll at least enjoy while you watch everyone else dive in to the burgers, chips and brownies.

Bring more than you think you’ll need just in case you end up staying longer than you planned. Pack a little cooler if you have to. You never want to end up in the “I’m starving but there’s nothing here I can eat” situation.   Do your best to stick to your normal routine in terms of when and how much you eat throughout the day.

While participating in the main meal may be tricky, consider bringing a GP-friendly after-dinner treat that you can share with others.  {You can’t go wrong with Rice Krispie Treats!}  Eating dessert along with everyone else will help you feel more included.  So will fully participating in non-food-related activities — horseshoes, boce, swimming…gossiping.  It will all help keep your mind off of your limitations. Plus, a little physical activity is good for digestion.

And remember: above all, you’re there to spend time with family and friends. While we never really get a day off from dealing with GP, if you can focus on the company and conversation rather than your belly, it can be a nice little break.

Happy Labor Day!
