GP Diet: Cream of Buckwheat

Since much of the typical gastroparesis diet is processed, packaged, or cold, a hot cereal can be a comforting and nutritious change of pace.  The key is finding one that’s tasty and easy to digest.

While whole buckwheat is high in fiber and not recommended for gastroparesis patients, Pocono’s Cream of Buckwheat is low in fiber, plus it’s organic, gluten-free, and fat-free.  It has a little more texture than cream of wheat, which I appreciate.  One 1/4 cup (dry) serving makes about 1 cup of hot cereal with 140 calories, 0 grams of fat, 1 gram of fiber, 0 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.  It also contains 14% of the RDA of iron.

I usually mix the cooked cereal with 2-4 ounces of pureed fruit — bananas, pumpkin, and cinnamon applesauce are among my favorites.   You can add honey, maple syrup, or cinnamon, depending on your preference.  I also recommend stirring in a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter or almond butter for a little healthy, GP-friendly fat and protein.  (Did you know that a GP-friendly diet can include up to 2 tablespoons of creamy nut butter per day?)

I buy Pocono’s Cream of Buckwheat at Wegmans.  It’s also available online for $2.95 per box.

Remember, not all gastroparesis patients tolerate the same foods.  Always try things for yourself and decide whether or not they work for you.

I bought some Buckwheat frozen waffles the other week and even though they were ‘plain’, they had the strongest blueberry flavor, it was crazy (but delicious).

I have been trying Trader Joe’s Cream of Wheat hot cereal for a few days now–half a serving, cooked on the stove using almond milk, and with an egg stirred in at the last bit of cooking time. I’m seeing how well I tolerate it, and so far so good. It only has 1g of fiber per whole serving.

Sounds great, Carrie! I love the idea of stirring the egg in at the end for a little bit of healthy fat, protein and extra vitamins.
